Barton is situated between Richmond and Darlington, near to the
A1(M). There is an active community, centred around the Village
Hall, Playing Fields Association, Primary School, Church and
Chapel.
The current Church by Ignatius Bonomi was built largely by public
subscription at a cost of around £900 in 1841- thus replacing the
two chapels of St Cuthbert and St Mary. The new church was
dedicated on 7th September 1841.
A series of six framed embroidery panels depicting the life of Saint
Cuthbert is on display, alongside the ‘ The Barton Tapestry 1997’,
on behalf of the village, which represents various enterprises
connected to the village.
The church has some fine Victorian stained glass windows. The
west window by William Wailes, contains the commandments,
Creed and Lord’s Prayer, and incorporates heraldic shields of
landed families associated with Barton, many of them manorial
lords.
There are close links with Barton Church of England Primary
School and Scout Group. Social and fund raising events - regular
concerts, luncheons, coffee mornings - details in the Link
Magazine.
