Great Smeaton village lies on the A 167 between Northallerton and Darlington. It
still has the historic milestone of the Great North Road, a main route between
London and the North, dating back to medieval times The A167 was one of the first
roads between Darlington and Boroughbridge to be turnpiked and the toll keeper’s
cottage, built in 1745 just outside the village, still exists. All that remains of a once
thriving village is one pub, the church, the village hall, a saddler and the school.
The church does not appear to have been dedicated to St. Eloy until after the
renovation of 1863. St. Eloy is the patron saint of smiths and therefore highly
appropriate for Great Smeaton, town of the smiths. Although many French
churches are dedicated to him it is believed that this is the only church in England
to be dedicated to St. Eloy.
