Moulton lies in a secluded valley between the villages of Scorton and Middleton Tyas
The village lies just to the east of the A1, however, access from the village has been
restricted to southbound traffic only for several years. Motorists intending to travel north
must head to Scotch Corner.
Moulton is mentioned in the Domesday Book as the residence of a Saxon named Ulph.
For a small village of about 50 residences, Moulton boasts both a late !6th century Manor
and a Hall built in the 17th century. After the Norman Conquest, the manor of Moulton
was transferred to the Earls of Richmond and changed hands many times, belonging to
the Marshall, Wright, Smithson, and Shuttleworth families.
The National Trust acquired Moulton Hall in 1966. It has a fine carved staircase as its
main feature and is open to the public on a limited basis by arrangement with the tenant.
The house is surrounded by parkland also owned by the Trust.
St Andrew's Chapel of Ease was once a barn and the conversion into a Chapel was led
by William Ward who died in 1837, aged 73. William was Deputy Registrar and Secretary to the Bishop of Chester. He, according to a plaque in
the Chapel, "took the deepest interest in making the building suitable for a Church of England place of worship. He did not live to see it quite
completed".
A more recent initiative has seen the old, uncomfortable, bench like, red painted pews removed by an enthusiastic team of villagers and replaced
with chairs. During the project, carpet was also laid and the inside completely re-decorated. New heating was also recently installed and the
Chapel now provides a meeting place for the community, the village hall having been demolished a number of years ago due to its poor condition.
Regular Book Swaps now take place on a Saturday morning (accompanied by coffee and cakes) with the funds raised going towards developing
the Chapel further as a community facility.
